Business and costs
The true cost of owning a desktop laser in the UK
The advertised machine price is only one line in the purchasing decision. Build three budgets before comparing value.
Budget 1: machine only
Record the exact configuration, included laser module, enclosure, bed, air assist, cooling equipment, software and warranty. State whether VAT and delivery are included.
Budget 2: minimum viable working setup
Add everything required to operate the intended process acceptably: source capture with safe discharge, or filtration selected and maintained for the identified contaminants and shown to be an effective control; ducting; cooling where applicable; a working surface or bed; necessary safety provisions; computer/software; and initial materials.
Budget 3: recommended setup for the application
Add productivity and capability items genuinely required by the work: rotary equipment, riser, pass-through support, jigs, replacement filters, maintenance supplies, spare lenses or mirrors, training and handling equipment.

Commercial viability comes later
A future calculator may consider operator time, setup, rejects, material, consumables, machine time, overhead and margin. It must present scenarios rather than earnings promises.
