Buying guide
Buying your first desktop laser
A good first machine is not the one with the longest feature list. It is the one that meets your real requirements without hiding unacceptable compromises.

Write a one-page requirement before shopping
- Materials, thicknesses, coatings and unknown-material policy
- Marking, engraving or cutting result
- Maximum product dimensions and batch size
- Weekly jobs and acceptable completion time
- Room dimensions, door access and lid/accessory clearance
- Extraction or outdoor discharge route
- Computer, operating system, file and offline requirements
- UK warranty, parts and return requirements
Questions that expose hidden compromises
Machine and optics
- Is the quoted wattage optical output?
- What wavelength and source does each operating mode use?
- What is the usable, not nominal, work area?
- What evidence supports cutting-depth claims?
Installation
- Is the enclosure included?
- What changes when a riser or pass-through is opened?
- What extraction, cooling or air assist is required?
- How much clearance is needed in use?
Workflow
- Is LightBurn or other required software supported by the controller?
- Which camera or autofocus features require proprietary software?
- Can core work continue without internet access?
- Are units clearly stated as mm/s or mm/min?
Ownership
- Who handles a UK warranty claim?
- Which filters, lenses, tubes or modules are consumable?
- Are replacement parts stocked?
- Who pays return freight for a heavy machine?
Sourced fact LightBurn publishes compatibility by controller and device family, illustrating why software support should be checked for the specific machine rather than inferred from a brand name. See LightBurn supported controllers.
Do not copy settings blindly
Speed, power and pass counts are only meaningful with the machine, optical output, material source and thickness, focus, air assist, units and desired result. Treat unqualified settings as starting hypotheses, not guarantees.
Research-only analysis A buyer should be able to explain why every shortlisted machine survived each hard gate. If the explanation depends mainly on popularity, discounting or a creator’s enthusiasm, the shortlist is not ready.
