Laser types
Diode vs CO₂ vs fibre, MOPA, infrared and UV
Laser source and wavelength influence what energy a material absorbs. Wattage alone cannot tell you what a machine is suitable for.
Blue diode
Investigate for wood, card, leather and selected dark or opaque materials. Open-frame configurations add enclosure and installation questions that must be resolved separately.
CO₂
Investigate for cutting and engraving many organic materials and acrylic, including clear acrylic. Confirm extraction, cooling arrangements, maintenance and the complete installed footprint.
Fibre and MOPA fibre
Investigate for marking and engraving metals and selected engineering plastics. Confirm the marked field and lens for the product. MOPA pulse-control flexibility does not turn a marking system into a general sheet-material cutter.
Infrared modules
Compact machines may use an infrared source for selected metals and plastics, sometimes alongside a diode. Output, wavelength and intended depth must be checked for the exact module.
UV
Investigate for fine marking of selected plastics, glass, crystal and electronic components. Confirm the exact material, intended result and marked field. “Cold marking” must not be read as fume-, fire-, skin- or eye-safe.
Technology is only one layer
After source suitability, compare the complete machine: enclosure, accessible hazard in each mode, work area, Z clearance, positioning, extraction, cooling, software, parts, support and ownership cost.
